Y'all have been following XKCD's "Time", right? If not: Over three weeks ago, XKCD's comic was an image of two people sitting on the ground. The mouseover text was, "wait for it". Every half hour, the image updated (the updates have since slowed to 1 per hour). It is still going. over 650 frames later. Here's a site that's been tracking it. It's not even that it's the best XKCD comic ever -- there are a dozen XKCD strips that I think of on a regular basis, and a few that still make me smile even though I've read them multiple times. But it's such a totally strange way to read a comic. And it's still not clear what the comic is about. Which maybe explains the addiction. I guess that's what people got out of Lost (I haven't actually watched it myself). Or some of why I used to read Hitherby.

But with books, the waiting thing can be totally frustrating. Like, I don't really care when the next _Walls of the Universe_ novel comes out. Because yes, there are things I would like to know about the multiverse, and yes, I believe it will be reasonably diverting, but ultimately, the mystery can wait. Whereas with _The Steerswoman_ series, every time I think of it, I get annoyed that there's not more. And I haven't started the second R. Scott Bakker trilogy because I'm going to be annoyed if I start it and then have to wait a couple years for the remainder. I might even wait until the third series is complete. Then if it turns into the Wheel of Time (which I quit after book 9, but should have quit earlier), I won't have wasted the time.

I don't really have a thesis here -- just some random thoughts.

As requested, commentary on another moron doing the right thing for the wrong (stated) reasons.

"Simply put, if The Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should I discriminate against their civil marriage? I shouldn't, and I won't"

This is perhaps even worse than Rob Portman's argument, in that it completely ignores the entire reason why anyone (Nelson included) opposes SSM in the first place.

[profile] sandmantv and [profile] thekinginyellow have posted about Rob Portman, but I don't think either of them has it quite right.

[profile] sandmantv says "I think there’s too much emphasis on the personal dimension of this." Then he follows up with "Yes this is their personal journey and lots of people have their eyes widened regarding tolerance because of how it touched them or someone close to them. Basic compassion is how liberal morals march on." Which seems to be pretty much saying that the personal dimension is all there is. I don't think that this is how liberal morals are supposed to work, but since I am not a liberal, I guess I can't say for sure.

[profile] thekinginyellow says it's about philosophy -- that what matters is getting the right answer for the right reason, and that our society doesn't value that enough. This is closer to right, because a philosophy is how you avoid making the same class of mistakes again. Portman has compassion for gay people now? Great! But he's still got a lot of work to do; he could, for instance, start having some compassion for cancer patients and support medical marijuana (yes, I checked; he doesn't).

I think it's actually all about cookies. Portman did a bad thing for a long time. His actions hurt a lot of people. It's good that he's no longer doing that bad thing. But he hasn't apologized. And he hasn't done anything to fix the problem that he was a part of. He could introduce a bill in the House tomorrow legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. It probably wouldn't pass, but it might shift the debate some. But even if he's a lazy bum, he could at least put his name on a brief. Where are you, Rob? Apologies and reparations matter, because they're the only thing keeping purely cynical politics from being a dominant strategy.

There's also the whole God problem. If you had asked Portman five years ago why he didn't support marriage equality, he would probably have answered with something about God. (You might have had to ask twice in order to get past the meaningless boilerplate "I believe a marriage is between a man and a woman"). So, what changed? Is God wrong? Or did God change his (God's) mind? Or did Portman "pray" and come to this conclusion? And if so, did God tell him something different than he told the next Republican over? Or is the next Republican over just really bad at this whole praying thing? Shouldn't this make Portman question all of the other stuff he thought that God had strong feelings on, like abortion?

This, I think, also explains some of the anger at Portman; he doesn't have to give up religion, but he's got to give up the kind of religion that's about controlling other people's lives. And because he hasn't done that, we simply can't trust him.

Context: I dropped out of college after two years, and haven't taken a college course since.

I just finished the Machine learning course from Coursera, taught by Andrew Ng. I really enjoyed it, and I think I learned a lot. I would happily take another course from Ng.

However, my impression of Coursera is that they basically don't give a shit about quality. The videos don't play on Chrome on Ubuntu. There were occasional uncorrected disfluencies -- cases where Ng started a sentence, stopped, then restarted the sentence; clearly, these should have been cut. And the last assignment had two bugs. Neither were showstoppers, but both should have been corrected. And yes, people did point these out on the forums, with no reply from Coursera. If these were the only issues, I would chalk them up to minor growing pains.

However, the Computer Vision course was a clusterfuck. I found myself sitting there while the professor silently wrote things on the whiteboard. This makes no sense -- *software* could have cut that shit out. Or like $50 on mturk, at worst. Also, the pace of the course was too slow by far. In a ten-week computer vision course, you cannot spend the first week proving minor results in geometry (with lines like, "if you remember this from Freshman Physics"). This is really too bad, because I have a really neat computer vision puzzle concept which I would love to know enough to be able to code.

Finally, having completed the ML course (that is, aced all of the review questions and programming exercises that remain open), I think I ought to be able to click a "Get my motherfucking certificate now" button, even though the last video doesn't officially air until next week (they were releasing them a week early), and the last assignment isn't due until like August. I'm done -- let me out of here!

(1) [livejournal.com profile] regyt has some wool laid out on a towel top of the chest freezer. I just reached into the freezer to get some lamb stock, and it struck me how apt it was that I was reaching under lamb wool to get (boiled) lamb bones.

(2) A couple of my friends had posts up which mentioned Will Shetterly, but they didn't say his name. I wondered what they were afraid of, so I went into the bathroom, turned out the lights, and said "Will Shetterly, Will Shetterly, Will Shetterly," while spinning around in front of the mirror. When I opened my eyes, I saw nothing at all in the mirror -- but suddenly, all that comes out of my hot water tap is tomato juice, and all that comes out of my cold water tap is vodka. And why has my soap been replaced with this tabasco sauce?

(Edit: I swear I posted this before I saw xkcd)

We use Mediawiki to manage our recipes, and we highly recommend it. As we've cooked increasingly complicated dishes, we've started to change the way we organize our wiki. We now have recipes which are composed of subrecipes using a template that some people on #mediawiki helped me put together. When I was putting together the prep list for this Saturday's dinner, I noticed that I couldn't do this recursively. A bit of googling later, and I came to the solution:

Vote [livejournal.com profile] rm in the elections. There are only three users who have a serious explicit commitment to freedom of speech in their platform, and [livejournal.com profile] rm is both the best and most popular of these. My second and third choices are hopeless, so my ballot is effectively truncated.

This is one of those cases where I would rather that [livejournal.com profile] jameth, a non-serious candidate with no articulable platform, win than the current leader, [livejournal.com profile] legomymalfoy, because I think that LJ is ultimately doomed anyway, and a candidate who is serious about the status quo is significantly more likely to give the advisory board an air of legitimacy than a candidate who represents the protest vote. Still, I won't give [livejournal.com profile] jameth my second- or third-place vote because I think it's probably better to vote sincerely and see how it goes.

Note: this is somewhat different from how I would advise voting in a general election, because while I know lots of people who have left LJ, I know nobody (or almost nobody; I'm sure I'm forgetting someone) who has left their country because of politics.
I'm presently reading The Lost Steersman, the third Steerswoman novel by Rosemary Kirstein. It's going to be impossible to explain the awesome bit without minor spoilers for the second novel, so I'm not going to bother. I can't even give you the bare conclusion, because it will give you the entirely wrong idea about the book.

I got udon for lunch today, and realized that I would have to add it to the list of foods (chocolate mousse, baby back ribs) where mine is so good that it's not worth ordering at restaurants.

Or maybe this was a bad restaurant.

I read [livejournal.com profile] sinboy's copy of Little Brother, and then ordered a copy for [livejournal.com profile] wiz_jord.

I think it might be better to read it as a work of journalism than as SF. The technologies involved are so real that I've actually met some of the people involved. And the politics are so real as to be utterly depressing.

If you have youths in your life who care at all about freedom (or even hip non-youths), you should pre-order this book for them.

[plea for help at the end --- feel free to skip whining]

I have an account with Cingular. I am stuck with it (a) because I have a contract and (b) because it is the only cell phone provider which gets service in my apt.

The number started out as a Verizon landline in Cambridge, MA, was ported to T-mobile, and was ported to Cingular. I now live in Brooklyn, NY, but I wish to keep my Cambridge number because all my friends, family, and business associates have it. I recently asked Cingular to add another line to the same account, and to ship me a phone to go with the line. The new line will be used for [livejournal.com profile] regyt's law business; it needs to have a Brooklyn (718) number so that her clients know that she practices in New York City. All of these numbers have been and will be billed to my Brooklyn address. Cingular told me that they would not be able to initially assign a Brooklyn number, but that if I called after I activated the phone, they would be able to. So, I ordered the phone on 3/13 or so.

I dutifully waited until the phone arrived (3/20), and activated it. Then I called Cingular. They told me that they could not in fact change my second line to a Brooklyn number while maintaining my original, Cambridge number. The reason I was given was that the two billing systems (Cambridge and New York) were not integrated.

I offered several solutions; all were rejected. Solution 1: Cingular could bill me for an individual account for my second number, and credit me for the difference in price. Solution 2: Cingular could create a new individual account with a Brooklyn number, and forward that number to the phone. Solution 3: I obtained a new Brooklyn number through a service called Grand Central. I asked Cingular to port this number in to the new line. Cingular refused, claiming that my Cambridge number and the new Brooklyn number had to be billed separately.

What I want to happen: I want Cingular to accept the port (or issue a new Brooklyn number attached to the same line).

The difference in cost is about $700 over the life of the contract.

What I have done so far: I've contacted the FCC to inform them that Cingular is refusing to accept the port. I'm considering suing.

None of this is actually going to work, because Grand Central sucks too much to use it temporarily while we wait for the FCC or courts to take action. We need a way to have a number temporarily forward to another that is free or cheap, and I just can't find one. Can anyone help?
